Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Blind Low Vision NZ (BLVNZ) is seeking the next Head of Communications to drive our brand, reputation and impact across Aotearoa.

This strategic leadership role is accountable for internal and external communications, media, PR, brand growth, positioning BLVNZ as the organisation of choice for people with vision loss, supporters, partners, and the New Zealand public.

You will lead integrated, people‑centred communications that raise awareness, increase service demand and donations, and positively influence public eye health behaviours. Managing a team of four, you will work closely with service delivery, fundraising, philanthropy, and policy and advocacy teams to deliver high‑impact, commercially disciplined communications. In this role you will:

  • Lead organisation‑wide communications, media, PR and brand

  • Champion the voice of blind, deafblind and low vision clients

  • Develop and deliver PR, brand and communications strategies that measurably lift awareness and engagement

  • Position BLVNZ as a trusted voice on vision loss and eye health advocacy

  • Provide accessible, effective communications across multiple channels

  • Partner with the CEO and Board on high‑profile media opportunities and risks

  • Lead, develop and empower a high‑performing communications team

Ko wai koe | About you

You are an experienced senior communications leader with strong strategic, media and brand capability, a collaborative leadership style, and a passion for purpose driven work. You will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Communications

  • Strong communications experience across multiple channels and platforms

  • Strong and evidenced experience of working proactively with media to gain traction through earned and reactive PR

  • Brand management and development

  • Proven results as a senior manager and leader with a broad range of operational management experience

  • Excellent copywriting and proofreading skills
