IT Subject Matter Expert / Content Reviewer Roles

We are seeking expressions of interest for Subject Matter Experts and / or Content Reviewers to work with a project team designing and developing assessments and courseware for two Level 5 programmes of study in Information Technology:

NZ2595 - NZ Certificate in Information Technology (Level 5)

NZ5567 - NZ Diploma in Information Technology (Level 5) – Software Development Strand

The courses and assessments will be offered through the Online Distance Flexible Learning Platform iQualify used by Open Polytechnic. We are expecting to start the courseware design for the Certificate in July 2026 and for the Diploma in October 2026, with competition of the courseware development for all the Level 5 courses mid-2027. Following completion of the Level 5 programmes of study. We will also commence a refresh of the Bachelor of Information Technology and associated Graduate Certificates and Diploma courses.

Essential Skills:

  • Subject matter expertise and relevant practical experience in Information Technology in the following areas:
  • System and Business Analysis
  • Project Management
  • Cloud Computing
  • Cyber Security
  • Business Intelligence
  • Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
  • Smart Systems
  • Software Development
  • Databases
  • Digital Marketing
  • Experience in designing and developing assessments and courses for online delivery.

Subject Matter Expert

Subject Matter Experts provide focused specialist information and advice within their key area of expertise, collaborating closely with Learning Designers throughout the courseware design and development for both the assessments and the course content.

This will involve writing assessments and course content to align with the Learning Outcomes specified in the Course Descriptor and as requested by the Learning Designer for each course.

The time commitment for this role is expected to be on average 20 hours per week however, hours will vary, depending on the project deliverables during any given stage. The contract will contain fixed deliverables.

Content Reviewer

Content Reviewers are also experts in a specialist area and work in collaboration with the Learning Designer to review the work completed by the Subject Matters Expert. The contract will have variable deliverables up to a maximum payment.

Subject Matter Experts and Content Reviewers will have:

  • A thorough understanding of the essential skills and knowledge required to successfully work as an Information Technology practitioner within a business or wider community setting.
  • Experience working with education professionals to design and develop ākonga | learner centric assessments and course content.
  • Familiarity and an understanding of online, distance and flexible learning (ODFL) environments, particularly iQualify.
  • An understanding of the New Zealand tertiary education sector.
  • An understanding of the principles of te Tiriti o Waitangi | the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • The time available to meet the required project deliverables.
  • Ability to produce course content and assessments with a high standard of written English. You may be required to undertake a writing assessment.
