About the role
The Optical Shop is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Optical Lab Technician to join our team in Christchurch Central Canterbury. This is a full-time position that plays a crucial role in our laboratory operations, ensuring the precision and quality of optical products that our customers depend on. As an Optical Lab Technician, you will be responsible for manufacturing, assembling, and quality-checking optical lenses and eyewear components. This position is essential to maintaining our reputation for excellence and supporting our branches in delivering outstanding customer experience and high quality products.
Key responsibilities
Operate and maintain optical laboratory equipment including lens cutting machines, edging equipment.
Accurately measure and cut optical lenses to precise specifications using advanced laboratory technology
Assemble and mount lenses into frames, ensuring correct alignment and secure fitting
Perform quality control checks on all finished products to ensure they meet required standards and prescriptions
Verify prescriptions and work orders for accuracy before processing
Maintain detailed records of completed work and laboratory processes
Clean and maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with safety and hygiene standards
Manage inventory of optical materials, frames, and components
Communicate effectively with team members regarding job status and any issues identified
Keep up to date with new optical technologies and laboratory best practices
What we're looking for
Formal qualification/certification in optical laboratory technology OR equivalent practical experience
Proven experience working in an optical laboratory environment.
Proficiency in operating optical laboratory equipment and machinery
Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high quality standards
Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
Solid understanding of optical principles, lens types, and prescription specifications
Competency in using computer systems and laboratory management software
Strong organisational and time management skills
Ability to work independently whilst being a collaborative team member
Good communication skills and customer service awareness
Health and safety consciousness with a commitment to safe working practices
Desirable: Experience with digital surfacing technology or advanced coatings
