About the role
At the core of this role is the build and maintenance of telephone exchanges and data centres — the critical infrastructure that keeps New Zealand connected.
This role is based in Dunedin and covers the wider Otago and Southland areas. You'll provide field support across our network, building and maintaining the technologies that keep the region connected. It's hands-on, varied work, and you'll be part of a close, supportive team.
You'll work with networking technologies such as:
- Network transport
- Core IP (Internet Protocol) nodes
- Fibre install
- Inside plant technologies
- Various network systems, including legacy and telephony/PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
We'll provide the training, tools, PPE (personal protective equipment) and vehicle you need to do the job well. We also actively support people who want to build their capability and grow into new technologies, so you don't need prior experience with every system listed here.

What you'll do day to day
- Provide field support for ISP (Internet Service Provider) equipment, including IP, Ethernet and PSTN
- Work across network transport technologies, including legacy and OTN (Optical Transport Network)
- Carry out fibre build and provisioning, including OFDF (Optical Fibre Distribution Frame) patching and tie-cable installation
- Complete Ethernet and switchboard cabling
- Use fibre and telecommunications test instruments
- Carry out fault analysis and maintenance support
- Maintain install quality and QA (quality assurance) compliance
- Work safely and stay health-and-safety compliant
- Deliver friendly, helpful customer service
- Work independently, and know when to escalate an issue
What you'll bring
Essential
- 5+ years' relevant experience (or equivalent), and an interest in growing your skills in new technologies
- Knowledge of exchange environments and network nodes
- Ability to accurately follow activities documented in technical manuals
- A current NZ driver's licence
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, varied environment with a positive approach
- Availability to cover rostered standby / call-out duties, and occasional longer hours, shared fairly across the team — all paid in line with our standby and overtime rates
Nice to have
- Experience with network transport, including legacy and OTN (Optical Transport Network)
- Experience working with NOCs (Network Operations Centres), Level 2 support, customers, vendors and third parties
- Fibre and telecommunications testing experience
